The round lens at the top pivots down when the ring outside the cabinet on the left is pulled. The left lens is blocked and any label in the center if the slide then becomes visible in the right eye piece. In this photo a slide may be seen in position for viewing. As the hand crank on the right side of the cabinet is turned, the slide is lifted out of the tray and brought forward into the viewing position. When the crank is further rotated, it returns the slide to the tray and advances the tray. Unlike the standard Taxiphote, which merely lifts the slide up and down, the Mechanique model's mechanism must grab the slide off the lifting fingers and move it fore and aft. Below the slide is the bakelite tray, with a capacity of 25 slides. The tray is advanced front to back so the image to be viewed is centered over the slide lifting fingers.
